When she was tiny, she picked out chichi the ugly monkey with the homicidal looking fish attached to its hand...clearly the least cute toy a store could have to offer in the baby section filled with jolly elephants and cuddly kitties.
Now, she embraces Goofy of Mickey Mouse fame. You know the seemingly half witted dog with the clumsiness and the annoying gawrsh exclamation. She gets a sappy look on her small face and croons gooooofffyyy hat! I yuv him.
Also, on Sesame Street where I favored Ernie and dh liked Cookie Monster, our determinedly singular child has chosen Bert. Now who in the hell likes Bert? He is the dull one, the straight man with one stern eyebrow spanning his yellow egg face. Ernie is the fun one, the comic relief and hilarity. Bert liked oatmeal and pigeons and collected bottle caps. She LOVES it when he shows the collection. Bewt have caps! She swoons as though Gerard butler had announced he was about to do sit ups and needed a volunteer to hold his shirt.
She was given a rather horrifying toy shark with a net so it can eat her bath toys for storage. She named him Toby and kissed him. See her big toe is also named Toby the Toesie according to her and Toby shark wants to eat her toe, then she laughs! This would have frightened me as a kid.
Se gathers the dour, the awkward, the odd and nurtures them with enthusiasm. She has no equal in drawing out a shy toddler into happy play. No wallflowers are allowed to wilt, no grouches permitted to grump in her pushy shiny orbit.
So what were your eccentricities as a child? I liked playing alone in my closet and making the Barnes act out back to the future.
